This very interesting name is the Yorkshire medieval form of Sybil, the popular female personal name of the twelth century. The origination is Roman (Latin) where the word was a form of title for a person who could interpret the wishes of the Gods! As a Baptismal name, Sybil, was introduced by the Normans after the 1066 Invasion and many variants were developed which included Sibylla, Sibyllina, Sibille and Sibley, the latter being still found occasionally and the origination of the modern surname.
